Terere Kids Project
Social Projects offer free or discounted classes to students from low-income communities to help mitigate the disparities in access to educational and recreational resources.
Terere Kids Project was one of the first jiu-jitsu based social projects in Rio de Janeiro. Located in the Cantagalo Favela, right in between the infamous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the favela has some of the most beautiful views of the most popular tourist destinations, although most tourists aren’t even aware of its presence, just blocks away from their favorite beaches.
Terere Kids Projects provides free jiu-jitsu classes to over 50 kids from the Cantagalo favela. In additional to the kid’s classes, the academy also provides morning, afternoon, and evening classes at a discounted rate for adults from the community that struggle to pay academy fees and the project provides used gis and training clothes for anyone interested in giving jiu-jitsu a try.
Donations will help us with the following programs:
Snacks are an essential part of our work! We provide post-training snacks after the kid’s classes to ensure that no child goes home hungry!
It’s important to keep our little ones motivated and competitions are the best way for them to test what they have learned in class on the mats with other kids from around Rio. Our goal is to fund 10-15 kids for 2 local competitions from the SJJSAF organization.
We currently have two teachers and two auxiliary teachers working the project, 3 of whom are putting in free work every day. In order to ensure that everything at the project functions smoothly it’s important to make sure that they are taken care of too!
