Favelas are the Brazilian equivalent of housing projects. Rio’s favelas are some of the most written about, scrutinized, and studied low-income communities in the world.
They are characterized in media by violence, gangs, and drug trafficking which perpetuates the marginalization of these numerous communities and their resident's.
Favela Jiu Jitsu originated in the Cantagalo Favela in 2016 to help share stories and interviews from athletes from the favela and other jiu-jitsu based social projects around the world.
Production of Favela Jiu Jitsu T-Shirts help finance low-income athletes in Rio de Janeiro.
